Kaiwá

Kaiwá is a member of the Tupí-Guarani branch of the Tupian language family. It is spoken mainly along the Apa, Dourados and Ivinherna rivers in Mato Grosso do Sul State in southern Brazil, and also in neighbouring parts of Argentina. In 2003 there were about 180,000 Kaiwá speakers in Brazil, and another 500 in Argentina.

The language is also known as Caingua, Caiua, Caiwa, Cayua, Kaingwá, Kaiova, Kaiowá or Kayova. It is closely related to the Pai Tavytera language of Paraguay, and quite close to Paraguayan Guaraní.
